The Story of Mystic Pizza
Mystic Pizza is a 1988 American coming-of-age film directed by Donald Petrie and starring Julia Roberts, Annabeth Gish, Lili Taylor, and Vincent D’Onofrio. The film Mystic Pizza was produced by Michael Finnell and written by Alice Arlen and Amy holds Berg. It was the first major motion picture for both Roberts and Gish. The film’s title refers to a local pizzeria in the town of Mystic, Connecticut, where much of the film is set.
The movie follows the lives of three teenage girls who work at the pizzeria, “Mystic Pizza”. Daisy Arujo (Roberts) is a rebel who doesn’t want to follow in her family’s footsteps of working in the fishing industry; Katarina “Kat” Icaro (Gish) is a smart and independent girl who is determined to leave Mystic after high school; and Jojo Barbosa (Taylor) is a sweet girl who is trying to find her place in the world. The girls’ lives are changed forever when they meet a customer, Bill Boston (D’Onofrio), who comes into the pizzeria one day. Bill is a kind and gentle man who takes an interest in Daisy and her friends. He helps them see the world in a different light and teaches them that there is more to life than just working at Mystic Pizza.
The film was a box office success, grossing over $21 million against its $6 million budget. It received positive reviews from critics, with Roberts’ performance being singled out for praise. The film has since become a cult classic.

The Costumes of Mystic Pizza
What do you think of when you think of Mystic Pizza? The pizza, of course! But also the costumes. The iconic film, set in the 1980s, featured some great fashion, from Daisy’s (Julia Roberts) off-the-shoulder tops to Kat’s (Lilli Taylor) signature striped shirt.
Now, the film is being adapted into a musical, and the costumes are being designed by Tony Award winner Catherine Zuber. We spoke to Zuber about how she’s approaching the design of the show and what we can expect to see on stage.
“Mystic Pizza is such an iconic film, and the costumes are a big part of that,” Zuber said. “I’m really excited to be bringing those looks to life on stage.”
To create the look of the show, Zuber is drawing inspiration from both the film and the time period it’s set in. “There are some great ’80s fashion moments in the film, and we’re definitely going to be incorporating those into the show,” she said. “But we’re also updating some of the looks for a modern audience.”
One example? Daisy’s off-the-shoulder tops. “In the film, they were definitely ’80s,” Zuber said. “But for the musical, we’re doing them in a more timeless way.”
Of course, no discussion of Mystic Pizza would be complete without mention of Kat’s (Lilli Taylor) signature striped shirt. And don’t worry – it will definitely be making an appearance in the musical. “It’s such an iconic look,” Zuber said. “We had to find a way to incorporate it into the show.”
So what can audiences expect when they come to see Mystic Pizza: The Musical? Great music, sure – but also some killer ’80s fashion. We can’t wait to see what Zuber has in store!
