Rock music is a genre of popular music that originated in the United States in the 1950s. It has its roots in 1940s and 1950s rock and roll, and developed into a range of different styles in the 1960s and 1970s, including psychedelic rock, hard rock, progressive rock, and punk rock. The 1980s saw the rise of hair metal and glam metal, while the 1990s saw the emergence of alternative rock, grunge, and nu metal.

Rock music has produced some of the most iconic figures in popular culture. Elvis Presley was one of the first superstars of rock music, becoming a global phenomenon with his signature mix of country, R&B, and pop. The Beatles were a British band that conquered the world in the 1960s with their catchy pop tunes and innovative studio recordings. Jimi Hendrix was a towering figure in psychedelic rock who popularized the use of feedback and wah-wah pedals. Led Zeppelin were a British band who blended elements of blues, folk, and Asian music to create their own unique sound. Pink Floyd were an English band who became synonymous with experimental and progressive rock.

Rock Music Hall of Fame

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, established in 1983 and located in Cleveland, Ohio, United States, is dedicated to recording the history of some of the best-known and most influential musicians, bands, producers, and others that have in some major way influenced the music industry, particularly in the area of rock and roll.

The induction process is overseen by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. Voting is open to both the public, who can vote online for who they believe to be most deserving each year (five nominees are selected by a group of over 900 historians, museum professionals, music critics, and music industry figures), as well as to a group of more than 600 “voters” who are made up of past inductees and other music industry professionals. Ballots are then tabulated anonymously.
