Neo-soul is a genre of popular music that combines elements of rhythm and blues, soul, hip hop, and sometimes jazz. The term was coined in the late 1990s by music industry entrepreneur Kedar Massenburg during the development of artists such as Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, Lauryn Hill, and Maxwell.

Massenburg believed that this new sound would embody everything that was good about what came before it while also staying current and relevant for a new generation of R&B music fans. And he was right — neo-soul quickly took off, first in the United States and then around the world.

The new sound of neo-soul is often compared to that of classic soul music, but there are some important differences. For one, neo-soul artists tend to focus more on personal and introspective lyrics than their predecessors. They also often incorporate elements of hip hop into their songs, which gives them a fresh and contemporary sound.

The influence of Neo-Soul

Since its inception in the early 1990s, Neo-Soul has been a genre that has continued to grow in popularity both in the United States and internationally. While the origins of the genre can be traced back to artists like Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, and Maxwell, Neo-Soul has since been popularized by contemporary artists like Solange, SZA, and Khalid. But what is it about Neo-Soul that has captivated listeners around the world?

There are a few key elements that make Neo-Soul stand out from other genres of music. First, Neo-Soul is known for its focus on organic instrumentation and live instrumentation. This gives the genre a warm and inviting sound that is often missing from other genres of music. Second, Neo-Soul lyrics often focus on topics of love, relationships, and self-empowerment. This positive and uplifting message is something that many listeners can relate to.

Third, Neo-Soul often employs elements of jazz and R&B. This combination results in a sound that is both smooth and soulful. Lastly, Neo-Soul songs are typically shorter than songs from other genres. This allows listeners to easily digest the music and connect with the lyrics on a deeper level.
