The Soul of Sydney

Sydney’s soul music scene has been bubbling away for a few years now, with a number of great bands and artists emerging. Here are some of the best new Australian funk and soul acts to check out.

The Soul of Sydney is a collective of musicians who are dedicated to keeping the spirit of classic soul and funk alive. The group was formed in 2011 by guitarist/vocalist Nick Charles and organist/vocalist Matt McMahon, and they’ve been making waves ever since. The Soul of Sydney have released two albums – 2013’s ‘Keepin’ The Faith’ and 2015’s ‘Take Your Time’ – and they show no signs of slowing down. If you’re a fan of classic soul and funk, you need to check out The Soul of Sydney.

Another great Sydney-based soul/funk band is Electric Empire. Formed in 2012, Electric Empire is made up of some of Australia’s most talented musicians, including vocalist Joy McKean, horn player Brendan Reilly, bassist Alex Hains, guitarist Tim Rolleston and drummer Joel Burton. Electric Empire released their debut album ‘II’ in 2014, and it quickly established them as one of the best new soul bands in Australia. Bamboo Musik is a duo from Brisbane consisting of vocalist Katalyst (aka Kieran Lovatt) and producer Senojnayr (aka Hayden Jones). Bamboo Musik released their debut EP ‘The Waterfalls EP’ in 2016, and it received rave reviews from critics and fans alike.
