January

Funk music fans rejoice – there are plenty of great new releases to start off the year! Here are some of the most anticipated funk albums coming out in January:

-Hurray for the Riff Raff, The Navigator: This New Orleans-based band led by Alicia Simone is back with their sixth studio album, which includes the single “Rican Beach.”

-Chicano Batman, Freedom is Free: The LA quartet’s third LP features guest appearances from Jack White and El Niño on the stand-out track “Passenger.”

-Lee Fields & The Expressions, Special Night: The soul veteran teams up with the Expressions for an album that includes the smooth lead single “Make the World.”

February

J Dilla

J Dilla was a legendary producer who had a huge influence on the sound of hip hop. He passed away in 2006, but his legacy continues to live on through his music. His beats have been sampled by some of the biggest names in rap, and his work has been cited as an inspiration by many other producers. In 2017, a new album of previously unreleased J Dilla tracks was released, and it is sure to get everyone talking. Anderson .Paak

Anderson .Paak is an American singer, songwriter, rapper and record producer from Oxnard, California. His stage name is a combination of his middle name (Anderson) and his childhood nickname (.Paak), given to him by his mother.

He released his debut album, Venice, in 2014 and followed it up with Malibu in 2016. Both albums received critical acclaim and helped to boost Paak’s profile. He has collaborated with a number of high-profile artists, including Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Chance the Rapper and A Tribe Called Quest.

Paak’s musical style draws from a wide range of influences, including soul, hip hop, R&B, jazz and funk. He has been praised for his “retro” sound and for his ability to seamlessly blend different genres.

If you’re a fan of soulful, laid-back music with a retro vibe, then Anderson .Paak is an artist you should definitely check out.

Kaytranada

Hailing from Montreal, Canada, Louis Kevin Celestin, better known by his stage name Kaytranada, is a producer and DJ who has been making waves in the music industry since 2010. He is best known for his unique style of production which blends elements of hip hop, R&B, and electronic dance music.

Kaytranada first gained attention with the release of his debut mixtape, Kaytra Todo, in 2010. Since then, he has gone on to releasing two full-length albums, 99.9% and NOTHING LIKE US/ALL WE KNOW. He has also collaborated with a number of high-profile artists such as Chance the Rapper, Anderson .Paak, and Solange Knowles.

With his innovative production style and ability to cross genres, Kaytranada is an artist to watch out for in 2017.

Most Anticipated Albums

Mac Miller

Mac Miller is set to release his new album, The Divine Feminine, on September 16. The album features guest appearances from Ariana Grande, Kendrick Lamar, and Anderson Paak.

The Pittsburgh-born rapper has been releasing music since 2007, and his 2010 debut album, Blue Slide Park, went to number one on the Billboard 200 chart. Miller’s most recent album, GO:OD AM, was released in 2015 and reached number three on the Billboard 200.

Kendrick Lamar

One of the most anticipated albums of the year is Kendrick Lamar’s follow-up to his 2015 album To Pimp a Butterfly. Lamar is one of the most critically acclaimed rappers of his generation, and his new album is sure to be eagerly anticipated by fans and critics alike. The album doesn’t have an official title or release date yet, but it is expected to come out sometime in 2017.

Childish Gambino

Childish Gambino is the stage name of American actor, comedian, writer, director, producer, singer, songwriter, and rapper Donald Glover. He first came to public attention for his work with Derrick Comedy while a student at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. He later wrote for and starred in the NBC sitcom Community. He stars in the FX series Atlanta, which he also created and occasionally directs.
