J. Cole

It’s been a minute since we’ve heard from J. Cole, but he returns today with two new songs ‘The Climb Back’ and ‘Lion King on ICE’. The North Carolina rapper has been relatively quiet over the past year, making only a couple of guest appearances on songs by EarthGang and Dreamville labelmate Bas. He did executive produce Lute’s West 1996 project back in February and also shot a video for Young Thug’s ‘The London’ in May, but otherwise it looks like he was busy in the studio cooking up new music.

In an interview with Billboard last year, Cole revealed that he was working on two albums at the same time and was trying to figure out which one to put out first. “The album I want to put out first is very heartfelt, very introspective… It might not be what people want to hear right now because everybody wants that turn up, but it feels like it might be something people need right now,” he said about one of the projects. Guess we’ll find out soon enough which album he decided to go with. In the meantime, listen to his new songs below.

Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick Lamar returns with his fourth studio album, DAMN. The Compton MC’s latest record is his first since 2015’s To Pimp a Butterfly and was preceded by the singles “Humble” and “DNA.” As with all of Lamar’s albums, DAMN. was produced by in-house Top Dawg Entertainment team member Sounwave, as well as a variety of other collaborators including 9th Wonder, Boi-1da, Mike Will Made It, and DJ Dahi. The album features guest appearances from Rihanna, U2, and Zacari.

J. Cole’s “4 Your Eyez Only”

J. Cole’s “4 Your Eyez Only” is a commendable album full of thought-provoking rhymes and beats. It’s one of those albums that demands your attention from start to finish, and it’s easily Cole’s best work to date. There are very few weak tracks on the album, and the overall production is top-notch. If you’re a fan of hip hop, or even just good music in general, you need to check out “4 Your Eyez Only.”

Kendrick Lamar’s “DAMN.”

Kendrick Lamar has released his long-awaited new album, “DAMN.” The record is his fourth studio album and follows 2015’s masterpiece “To Pimp a Butterfly.”

While Kendrick Lamar is known for his dense and complex lyrics, “DAMN.” is more straightforward and observational. It’s a darker, more personal album than we’ve heard from him before, and it’s sure to be one of the most talked-about records of the year.

The album was supported by three singles: “Fake Love”, “Passionfruit” and “Portland”. “More Life” received generally positive reviews from critics and debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 with 504,000 album-equivalent units (including 127,000 in pure album sales). The album received triple platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Internationally it debuted at number one in several countries—including Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom—and became his second consecutive album to do so in all three countries.
