“All I Need” – Method Man

“All I Need” is a song by American hip hop recording artist Method Man, released December 21, 1993 as the second single from his debut studio album Tical. The song features a hook sung by Mary J. Blige and rap verses from both Method Man and fellow Wu-Tang Clan member Raekwon. It peaked at #36 on the Billboard Hot 100, #4 on the Hot Rap Songs chart and #8 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The song was produced by Easy Mo Bee.

“C.R.E.A.M.” – Wu-Tang Clan

On “C.R.E.A.M.”, the Wu-Tang Clan reflects on growing up in the tough world of Staten Island’s drug trade. The title is an acronym for “Cash Rules Everything Around Me”, and the song’s chorus (“I got the C.R.E.A.M./ I got the power”) is a celebration of materialism. But Raekwon’s verses show the harsh realities of life in the ghetto, with lines like “Dirty money, filthy rich, kill a n—a for fifty bricks”. The song’s gritty production, courtesy of RZA, matches its lyrical themes perfectly.

“Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang” – Dr. Dre

With its G-funk bounce and unforgettable refrain, “Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang” was an instant classic when it dropped in 1992. Two years later, it hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100, making it one of the biggest rap hits of all time. Dr. Dre’s now-legendary solo debut album, The Chronic, is packed with West Coast classics, but this is the song that started it all.

“Gin and Juice” – Snoop Dogg

“Gin and Juice” is a song by American rapper Snoop Dogg. It was released on December 5, 1993, as the lead single from his debut album Doggystyle. The song was produced by Dr. Dre and featured uncredited vocals from Dat Nigga Daz. The song has been ranked among the greatest songs of all time by publications such as Pitchfork Media, NME, and Rolling Stone.

The music video for “Gin and Juice” was directed by Dr. Dre and Calvin Cadwell. It features Snoop Dogg driving around Los Angeles in a convertible Cadillac with members of his crew.

“The Humpty Dance” – Digital Underground

“The Humpty Dance” is the only song on this list that was released in 1990, but it was too good to leave off. The song samples “Somebody’s Watching Me” by Rockwell and “Funk You Up” by the Sequence, and it was a huge hit for Digital Underground. It peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.

In October 2014, the song peaked at number one on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and number three on the US Rap Songs chart.

“All About the Benjamins” – Puff Daddy

This song is emblematic of everything that is wrong with commercial hip hop today. It is loud, obnoxious, and mind-numbingly repetitive. The lyrics are laced with references to money, materialism, and excessive consumption. This is not the kind of music that is going to inspire or challenge listeners – it is nothing more than empty noise designed to get people to spend their hard-earned cash. Avoid this track at all cost.

“I’ll Be Missing You” – Puff Daddy
