This isn’t the first time Perry has taken on social and political issues in her music. Her song “Firework” was inspired by the story of teenage Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, and her song “Roar” was an anthem for survivors of domestic violence.

Katy Perry – “Chained to the Rhythm”

chains herself to a literal hamster wheel in the new music video for her song “Chained to the Rhythm.” The video, which was released on Thursday, is a commentary on society’s obsession with social media and technology. Perry is Critical of our need to be constantly “connected” and our addiction to our screens. The lyrics of the song ask the question “are we crazy? / living our lives through a lens / trapped in our white picket fence / like ornaments.” In the video, Perry and her love interest, played by Orlando Bloom, are both chained to their phones and are only able to interact with each other through social media. They live in a perfect world where they are fed what they want to hear and see, and they don’t question anything outside of their little bubble. It’s only when they stumble upon a hidden TV that they realize there might be more to life than what they’ve been told. The video is a clever way of getting people to think about how much time they spend on their phones and whether or not they’re really living life or just going through the motions.

Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You”
