New Pop Music to Check Out in July 2012

July 2012 Pop Music Releases

As the summer continues, so does the stream of new pop music. The middle of July brings new releases from a variety of artists, including some up-and-comers and some established hits-makers. Below are some new pop albums and singles to check out this month.

“Somebody That I Used to Know” – Gotye
The first single off of his latest album, “Making Mirrors,” Belgian-Australian singer-songwriter Gotye has been making waves with this hauntingly beautiful song. The song is an exploration of a failed relationship told from both perspectives, and its unique sound – a mix of indie rock, electronica and soul – has made it a favorite among critics and listeners alike.

“Call Me Maybe” – Carly Rae Jepsen
This catchy tune from Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen has been climbing the charts all summer long, thanks in part to some creative (and hilarious) videos featuring everyone from the U.S. Olympic swim team to the residents of a nursing home lip synching the song. If you haven’t heard this one yet, you definitely need to check it out.

“Payphone” – Maroon 5
The first single off their forthcoming album “Overexposed,” Maroon 5’s “Payphone” features rapper Wiz Khalifa and is classic Maroon 5: a upbeat, infectious pop song with a great hook. If you’re a fan of the band’s earlier hits like “Moves Like Jagger” and ” Makes Me Wonder,” you’ll definitely want to give this one a listen.

“We Are Young” – fun.
This anthemic track from Brooklyn-based band fun. spent six weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart earlier this year, thanks in part to its use in Chevrolet’s Super Bowl XLVI commercial. The song is soaring and uplifting, and is sure to get stuck in your head after just one listen.
