Reggae music has its origins in the ska and rocksteady styles of Jamaican music from the 1960s. Reggae is often created with a four-beat measure, with accents on the off-beats. The tempo of reggae is usually slow to medium. Most reggae is vocal music, though instrumental versions exist in abundance. Reggae songs are frequently about love, especially romantic love, or peace. While 1968’s “The Israelites” by Desmond Dekker was a crossover hit in the United Kingdom and United States, it was the 1972 film The Harder They Come that introduced many mainstream audiences to reggae. The film starred Jimmy Cliff as Ivanhoe Martin, an aspiring reggae musician who finds stardom but also runs into trouble with gangsters and the law. In recent years, however, many newer reggae bands have been reaching wider audiences with hits like Sean Paul’s “Temperature” (2005), Shaggy featuring Ricardo “RikRok” Ducent’s “It Wasn’t Me” (2001) and Inner Circle’s “Bad Boys” (1993).
