J. Cole- “2014 Forest Hills Drive”

J. Cole’s third studio album, “2014 Forest Hills Drive”, was released on December 9th, 2014. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 353,000 copies in its first week. The album’s lead single, “Apparently”, peaked at number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Big Sean- “Dark Sky Paradise”

Big Sean’s third studio album, “Dark Sky Paradise”, was released on February 24, 2015. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 173,000 album-equivalent units in its first week. It is Sean’s first number-one album and sold over one million copies in the United States. The album was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 58th Grammy Awards.

Kendrick Lamar- “To Pimp a Butterfly”

Kendrick Lamar’s “To Pimp a Butterfly” was released on March 15, 2015 and is the newest hip hop album as of now. It is Kendrick Lamar’s third studio album and features 16 tracks. This album explores the rapper’s own struggles with fame and addresses social issues such as racism.

Commercial Success

Recently, mainstream media has been giving more attention to hip hop than ever before. This is in part because the music is more popular than ever, but also because it is becoming more commercially successful. This section will discuss the commercial success of hip hop in 2014.

Iggy Azalea- “Fancy”

“Fancy” is a song recorded by Australian rapper Iggy Azalea for her debut studio album, The New Classic (2014). It was released on 17 February 2014 as the fourth single from the album. “Fancy” was produced by Satellite Music and written by Azalea, Sara Forsberg and Caroline Kosters. The song originally appeared on Azalea’s mixtape TrapGold in 2012, before being remixed and included on The New Classic.

Upon release, “Fancy” received mixed reviews from music critics; some complimented its catchiness and others criticized it for its similarity to other songs released at the time. Commercially, “Fancy” became a worldwide success, peaking at number one in Australia, Canada and the United States, while also charting within the top five in various other countries including New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

The song’s accompanying music video was directed by Director X and released in March 2014. It depicts Azalea in various clinch-and-grab scenarios with several famous men, including Michael Jordan and Sean Combs. The video was nominated for four MTV Video Music Awards at the 2014 ceremony, ultimately winning Best Female Video.

Wiz Khalifa- “See You Again”

“See You Again” is a song recorded by American rapper Wiz Khalifa, featuring American singer Charlie Puth. The track was commissioned for the soundtrack of the 2015 film Furious 7 as a tribute to actor Paul Walker, who died in a single-vehicle crash on November 30, 2013. Initially the song was commissioned to be recorded by British singer Ellie Goulding; however, after hearing a demo version of the song with Puth’s vocals, she andip hop record producer DJ Frank E decided that Puth’s voice worked better for the track.

The song was written by Andrew Cedar, Mike Posner and Charlie Puth, while being produced by DJ Frank E and Cedar. Upon release, “See You Again” peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for twelve non-consecutive weeks. It also holds the record for most-streamed track on Spotify in a single day; it amassed 4.26 million streams on April 12th 2015. The music video was released on April 6th 2015 and directed by Marc Klasfeld; it features footage from Furious 7 intercut with shots of people remembering those who died in their lives.”See You Again” became both Khalifa’s and Puth’s biggest hit to date. In various year-end lists, it was ranked as one of the best songs of 2015.

Controversy

The newest hip hop music of 2014 has been full of controversy. Some believe that the music is too explicit and degrading to women, while others believe that it is a form of expression that should be allowed.

Bobby Shmurda- “Hot N*gga”

“Hot N*gga” is a song by American hip hop recording artist Bobby Shmurda. The song was released as Shmurda’s commercial debut single on July 25, 2014 by Epic Records. The song peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Shmurda’s highest-charting single to date. It also topped the US Rap Songs chart for seven non-consecutive weeks.

The song was originally titled “Hot Nigga (Freestyle)” and was released as part of Shmurda’s “Shmoney Dance” series of songs and videos. The original version of the song did not feature a chorus, and the beat was produced by Jahlil Beats. A remix of the song, featuring a verse from hip hop recording artist Fabolous, was released on August 5, 2014. A second remix, featuring a verse from American rapper Busta Rhymes, was released on August 12, 2014.

The music video for “Hot N*gga” was released on July 31, 2014 and features Shmurda and his friends dancing in various locations around Brooklyn, New York City. The dance performed in the video, which has been dubbed the “Shmoney Dance”, became popular online and spawned numerous Vine and YouTube videos of people performing the dance. On August 14, 2014, Shmurda appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to perform the “Shmoney Dance”.

XXXTentacion- “Look at Me!”

Controversy always seems to follow rising hip-hop star XXXTentacion, and his latest song is no exception. “Look at Me!” has come under fire for its violent and graphic lyrics, which many feel glamorize domestic abuse and sexual violence.

XXXTentacion has been embroiled in legal trouble throughout his career, and was even arrested on charges of assault and battery earlier this year. Despite this, his music has continued to grows in popularity, especially among younger fans.

Whether you love or hate XXXTentacion, there’s no denying that he’s one of the most controversial figures in hip-hop today. Only time will tell if “Look at Me!” will be a career-defining moment for the young rapper, or if it will simply add fuel to the fire of his already tumultuous career.
