José Álvaro Osorio Balvín (born May 7, 1985), known professionally as J Balvin, is a Colombian reggaeton singer. Balvin was born in Medellín, Colombia. At age 17, he moved to the United States. He said of his experiences: “I didn’t know anybody. I had to work really hard, really, really hard.” He also has cited Michael Jackson and Mexican pop music legend Gloria Trevi as major influences. In an interview with Rolling Stone he said: “I grew up listening to a lot of Mexican music—Veracruzana music and banda and Norteña music—plus a lot of hip-hop and reggae growing up.” Balvin began pursuing a career as a singer at age 15 when he was discovered by a local producer who took him to record some tracks for his first album, Real G 4 Life in 2007. The production of this album was handled by neighborhood friends Fernando Tobón and Julio Reyes Copello. In 2009 he released his second album, La Familia which charted on various Latin Billboard columns.
