Norwegian Folk Music

Norwegian Folk Music is a tradition of music that is passed down from generation to generation. The music is often passed down orally, from one musician to another. Norwegian Folk Music is typically played on acoustic instruments, such as the violin.

Traditional Norwegian Folk Music

Norwegian folk music is the music of Norway. Folk music includes both traditional music and the folk music of today. The older generation of Norwegians, brought up before World War II, was exposed to traditional Norwegian folk music. After the war, American jazz and rock and roll became more popular. Today, Norwegian musicians are experimenting with a wide variety of musical styles.

The Norwegian fiddle tradition is perhaps the best known form of Norwegian folk music. Hardanger fiddles (hardingfele) are particularly characteristic of Norwegian folk music. These violins have four or five extra strings which vibrate sympathetically with the other strings, producing a “drone” effect that gives the music a characteristic sound. The most famous hardanger fiddler was Ola Kvernberg, who won first prize at the 1987 Hardanger Music Festival.

Norwegian folk songs are often about love, nature, or history. Many of these songs were first collected by oral tradition and then written down by folklore scholars in the 19th and 20th centuries. Some of Norway’s most famous folk songs include “I Dovregubbens Hall” (In the Hall of the Mountain King), “Ja vi elsker dette landet” (Yes, We Love This Country), and “Soria Moria Slott” (The Castle on Sorrel Mountain).

In recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in Norwegian folk music, both among performers and listeners. This has been partly due to the work of contemporary Norwegian musicians who have been influenced by traditional folk music but not afraid to experiment with other musical genres. Some of these artists includeAnnbjørg Lien, Odd Nordstoga, Hedningarna, Jenny Hval, amongst many others.

Contemporary Norwegian Folk Music

Norwegian Folk Music has been relatively unknown outside of Norway – until recent years. In the last two decades, there has been a renaissance of sorts, with a new generation of musicians carrying on the traditions of their ancestors.

Though Norwegian Folk Music is often thought of as being strictly traditional, there is a contemporary side to it as well. Many young musicians are keeping the tradition alive by playing the music in their own unique style. Some have even gone so far as to create new compositions, drawing on the traditional Norwegian folk music sound while adding their own modern flair.

If you’re interested in exploring the contemporary side of Norwegian Folk Music, there are some excellent resources available. Check out CDs by Annarres Kristiansen or Duo Egil & Steinar for a taste of what’s out there.
