Every Wednesday, NPR’s All Songs Considered podcast features a segment called “Song of the Day,” in which host Bob Boilen shares a new song that he’s been enjoying. Occasionally, Boilen will play a folk song on the show.

Folk music is often passed down through generations, and it can be about any topics that people face in their lives. It can be religious or political, or it can be about love or loss. Folk songs can also be about humor or everyday life.

While there are many different interpretations of what folk music is, Boilen says that for him, it’s music that tells a story. “It’s music that has something to say,” he says. “It’s music that comes from real life experience.”

If you’re looking for some new folk music to check out, here are 10 songs that Boilen has played on the show:

1. “Samson” by Regina Spektor
2. “John Henry” by Anaïs Mitchell
3. “House of Gold” by Hozier
4. “The Auld Triangle” by The Pogues
5. “Jean Genie” by David Bowie

This year’s NPR Tiny Desk Concerts have been an extraordinary showcase for folk music from around the world. We started the series off with a Tiny Desk set from Irish singer-songwriter Dermot Kennedy, who charmed us all with his anthemic song “Outnumbered.” We’ve also featured two other outstanding Irish artists — Lisa Hannigan, whose performance included a heart-wrenching cover of David gray’s “Please Forgive Me,” and the legendary Mary Black, who brought us a gorgeous rendition of “Danny Boy.”

But it’s not just Ireland that’s been represented in our Tiny Desk series this year. We’ve also had stunning sets from British singer-songwriter Passenger, alt-country troubadour Jason Isbell, and Mali’s Songhoy Blues, who brought their signature mix of Malian desert blues and garage rock to our stage.

And we’re not done yet! We’ve still got performances coming up from some of the biggest names in folk music, including Gillian Welch, Ry Cooder, and Kacey Musgraves. So stay tuned for more great folk music coming your way on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts.
