The History of the Old Town Folk Music Center

In the late 1940s, a group of jazz enthusiasts in Chicago’s Old Town neighborhood started a folk music club. They met in various basements and rented halls, but eventually outgrew their spaces. In 1963, they opened the Old Town Folk Music Center at its current location on North Ave. The club became a gathering place for both local and touring folk artists.

In the early days, the center hosted weekly hootenannies where anyone could come and play. The open mics continue to this day, though now they’re called “The Song Circle.” Over the years, the Old Town Folk Music Center has welcomed some of folk music’s biggest names, including Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Peter, Paul & Mary.

The Old Town Folk Music Center is more than just a music venue; it’s also a teaching space. The club offers classes on topics like guitar playing and songwriting. They also have a lending library with instruments and books available for borrowing.
