History

The Old Town School of Folk Music is a music school in Chicago, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1957 by Win Stracke and Frank Hamilton. The school offers classes in music and dance, with an emphasis on American folk music, and also hosts performances by visiting artists. It is located in the Lincoln Park neighborhood on the city’s North Side.

In its early days the school was informally known as the People’s Music School. The name was changed to Old Town School of Folk Music to reflect its location in the Old Town Triangle neighborhood, home to many of Chicago’s bohemian artists and musicians in the 1950s and 1960s.

The school began as a weekday evening program for adults interested in learning folk guitar; it has since expanded to include classes and workshops for all ages and levels of ability, offered both during the week and on weekends. It offers instruction on over 30 different instruments, as well as singing, songwriting, ensembles, ethnomusicology, dance, Early Childhood music classes for kids 0-5 years old and their caregivers and private lessons.
