How It All Started

Even though she didn’t know it at the time, Holly Herndon’s music career started when she was just a child. Growing up in rural Virginia, Herndon didn’t have access to many musical instruments or opportunities to learn about music production. However, she did have a computer, and she soon began using it to create her own electronic music.

Herndon’s sound is hard to pin down; it’s constantly evolving and often defies genre categorization. But at its core, her music is about creating connections between people and machines. The First Steps

In the early days, electronic music was mostly made by people with a background in classical music. Many of them were working at institutions like the BBC, where they had access to state-of-the-art equipment.

Some of the first electronic music was created using analog synthesizers. These instruments generate sound by creating electrical signals that are then converted into sound waves. Early composers such as Delia Derbyshire and Brian Eno used analog synthesizers to create groundbreaking pieces of music.

With the advent of digital technology, it became possible to create and manipulation sounds with a computer. This opened up a whole new world of possibilities for composers and producers. The Present

It’s a little after 9 on a weekday morning and Nicole Carino is in her workshop in the back of her house in Brooklyn, New York. Carino is a luthier, which is a person who makes or repairs string instruments like guitars. But she didn’t always make guitars. Carino used to be a touring musician and producer who made electronic music.

When people ask Cailyn Deirdre what she does for a living, the answer is usually pretty straightforward: “I’m an electronic musician,” she says. “I produce and perform my own music.” What’s not so straightforward is how she got to where she is today – from performing her own music to building the instruments she now uses to create it.

It all started with a love for electronic music. As a teenager, Cailyn was fascinated by the way that producers and DJs could create entire tracks using nothing more than a laptop and some software. She started producing her own music as a hobby, and quickly found herself hooked on the creative process. “I loved the feeling of being able to make something out of nothing,” she recalls. “It was like painting or sculpting, but with sound.”

This passion eventually led her to study audio engineering at university, where she learned about the technical side of music production. It was here that she discovered her true calling: building electronic instruments. “I realized that I didn’t just want to make music, I wanted to make the tools that other musicians could use to make their own music,” she says. “It was a lightbulb moment.”

After graduating from university, Cailyn started her own company specializing in the design and construction of custom-built electronic instruments. These days, she spends her days working with clients all over the world who are looking for unique ways to create sound. “Every day is different,” she says. “I might be working on a new design for a synthesizer one day, and testing out prototypes the next.”

And while her work is certainly rewarding, it’s also challenging – especially when it comes to staying ahead of the curve in an ever-changing industry. “The landscape of electronic music is constantly shifting,” she explains. “So it’s important to stay on top of new trends and technologies.” For Cailyn, this means spending a lot of time experimenting in her studio – something that she views not as work, but as a passion. “I’m always trying new things and pushing myself to see what’s possible,” she says. “It’s what I love about this job.”

How She Got Here

It’s been a long road for Sarah Bowden, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. The 27-year-old from Northampton, England is now a rising star in the world of electronic music, but her journey has been anything but straightforward.

Bowden started out making music on her computer in her bedroom when she was just 13 years old. She was instantly hooked and knew that she wanted to pursue a career in music. After finishing high school, she attended the Brighton Institute of Modern Music where she studied audio engineering and production. It was there that she met some of the people who would play a pivotal role in her future success.

The Future

At just 25 years old, Claire L. Evans is a musician, artist, and writer who is interested in the intersection of technology and culture. She is one-half of the Los Angeles-based band YACHT, and her writing has appeared in The Atlantic, The New Inquiry, VICE, and Motherboard. Evans is also the co-founder of the online magazine Terraform, which is dedicated to “long-form writing about the future of everything.”

What She Wants to Do Next

Even though she has found great success in her current field, she is always looking for ways to improve and innovate. One of her goals is to create a platform that makes it easy for people to create and share their own music. She also wants to continue to push the boundaries of what is possible with electronics, and create new devices that make people’s lives easier.

Her Plans

Ms. Zhang is a senior at the University of Rochester who is passionate about music and building things. She has spent the last four years of her life exploring those passions, and she has no plans to stop anytime soon.

Ms. Zhang grew up in a small town in upstate New York, and she was always interested in music. She started playing the piano when she was five years old, and she picked up the violin a few years later. In high school, she began to explore electronic music production, and she fell in love with it. She started making her own music, and she even performed at a few local clubs.

After graduation, Ms. Zhang enrolled at the University of Rochester, where she studied electrical engineering and computer science. She continued to make music on the side, but her focus was on her studies. In her junior year, she had an internship at a local company that makes electronic musical instruments. That experience confirmed her desire to work in the music industry, and she decided to pursue it after graduation.

Ms. Zhang is now in her final semester of college, and she is preparing for her future career. She has already lined up a job at a prominent music equipment company, and she plans to continue making her own music on the side. She is excited to combine her two passions and build things that will make people happy.
