Qualifications

The Opera & Choral Department Head for the Summer Music Institute (SMI) is a full-time, exempt position responsible for the artistic leadership and administrative management of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music’s SMI program.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years’ experience in opera and choral administration, as well as be an active musician with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively. They will also have excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills; be able to take initiative and work independently; and exhibit a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

To be considered for this position, applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in music or equivalent experience; Master’s degree preferred.

Duties

The Opera & Choral Department Head for the Summer Music Institute (SMI) is responsible for leading and managing the artistic and musical operations of the department. The department head will oversee all aspects of the department, including rehearsal and performance schedule, auditions, music selection, budgeting, and personnel management. The department head will also be responsible for maintaining a high level of artistic quality and integrity in all aspects of the department’s operations.

The Opera and Choral Department Head for the Summer Music Institute is a compensated, full-time, live-in position. The Head of the Opera and Choral Department is responsible for the artistic planning and management of all aspects of the Opera and Choral Program.

What is the Summer Music Institute?

The Summer Music Institute (SMI) is a three-week program that provides rigorous instruction in vocal and instrumental performance, musicianship, and the business of music. SMI is designed for serious music students who wish to pursue a career in music. The program offers courses in opera, oratorio, chamber music, lieder, art song, choral conducting, score reading, singing diction, and vocal technique. SMI also features Master Classes led by world-renowned opera singers and conductors.

When is the Summer Music Institute?

The Summer Music Institute is a three-week program that takes place annually in July. The program is designed for talented high school students who are interested in pursuing a career in music. The Institute offers participants the opportunity to work with some of the world’s leading music faculty, perform in state-of-the-art facilities, and participate in a variety of musical and non-musical activities.

The Summer Music Institute at the University of North Texas is seeking to hire an Opera & Choral Department Head. This is a full-time, temporary, non-exempt position. The position will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the department, as well as teaching and conducting classes.

About the Program:
The USC Thornton School of Music’s Summer Music Institute (SMI) is an intensive, comprehensive training program for advanced young musicians that offers a supportive and nurturing environment in which they can develop their artistry while working with some of the world’s most renowned teachers and performers. The program consists of three two-week sessions, each of which culminates in a public concert. Participation is open to instrumentalists, pianists, singers, and composers ages 16-22.
