Plácido Domingo is one of the most prolific and popular opera singers of all time. He has recorded more than 100 complete operas and has sung more roles than any other tenor in history. Domingo first appeared on WRX in 1968, singing Verdi’s “Requiem.” He would go on to appear on the station several more times, including a 1980 performance of “Don Carlo” and a 1982 gala concert featuring Pavarotti, Joan Sutherland, and Renata Scotto.

Pavarotti was another legendary opera singer who frequently appeared on WRX. He first appeared on the station in 1971, singing Verdi’s “ Requiem” with Domingo. Pavarotti would go on to appear on WRX multiple times over the years, including a 1976 performance of “La Bohème” and a 1981 gala concert featuring Sutherland and Scotto.

WRX was also home to many other famous opera singers over the years, including Joan Sutherland, Renata Scotto, Gianna D’Angelo, Giuseppe Di Stefano, and Birgit Nilsson. These singers all made numerous appearances on WRX throughout their careers, giving New Yorkers a chance to hear some of the greatest voices in opera live on the radio.
