The most famous Baroque opera is George Frideric Handel’s “Messiah.” The next era is known as Classical Opera, which spanned from the late 1700s to the early 1800s. The most famous Classical opera is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro.” The final era is Romantic Opera, which lasted from the early 1800s until 1914. Opera originated about 1600 in Florence, Italy, and soon spread throughout Italy and then to other countries. By 1700 it was firmly established in Germany, England, France and Spain as well as Italy. Today opera is performed all over the world.

The first operas were short pieces with simple plots based on Classical mythology or legend. The first great operas were written in the early 1600s by Giacomo Peri (1561–1633) and Claudio Monteverdi (1567–1643). These composers wrote works that are still performed today, such as Peri’s Euridice (1600) and Monteverdi’s Orfeo (1607). Other early operas were written by Alessandro Stradella (1639–1682), Henry Purcell (c. 1659–95) and George Frideric Handel (1685–1759).

During the 1700s, many operas were written in Latin, but some composers wrote operas in their own language so that more people could understand them. In 1762 an Italian composer named Domenico Cimarosa wrote an opera called Il matrimonio segreto (‘The Secret Marriage’) which was so successful that it was soon being performed all over Europe. In 1791 another Italian composer, Giovanni Paisiello wrote an opera called La serva padrona (‘The Maid Servant Turned Mistress’) which caused a lot of arguments because some people thought it was too funny to be an opera!

In the 1800s many famous operas were written, such as Carmen by Georges Bizet (1838–75), La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini (1858–1924), Madama Butterfly also by Puccini, La traviata by Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1901) and Falstaff by Verdi. Many of these operas are still being performed today.

The Different Opera Singers

There are four main types of opera singers: sopranos, mezzo-sopranos, tenors, and basses. Each type of singer has a different range, and each type is associated with specific roles.

Sopranos are the highest-pitched type of opera singer, and they typically play the lead roles in operas. Mezzo-sopranos have a lower range than sopranos, and they often play supporting roles. Tenors have a higher range than basses, and they usually sing love songs or heroic arias. Basses have the lowest range of all the opera singers, and they often play comic roles or sing evil villain songs.
