The song is sung by the phantom, a masked figure who lives in the underground of the Paris Opera House. The phantom is in love with Christine, a young singer. He wants her to love him back, but she is in love with Raoul, a young man from her past. The phantom’s love turns to obsession and he starts to stalk Christine.
