What is dubstep?
Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in South London in the late 1990s. It is generally characterized by sparse, syncopated rhythmic patterns with prominent sub-bass frequencies. The style emerged as an offshoot of UK garage, drawing on a lineage of related styles such as 2-step and dub reggae. In the 2010s, the genre began to be influenced by trap music.
The history of dubstep
The word dubstep is first used in reference to a genre of electronic dance music (EDM) that originated in South London in the late 1990s. The term is thought to be a portmanteau of the words “dub” (a type of Jamaican music that influenced the development of dubstep) and “step” (a reference to the stomping, two-step rhythms characteristic of the genre). Dubstep emerged as a subgenre of British electronic dance music, also known as garage or grime, in the early 2000s. It was initially characterized by dark, minimalistic beats and sparse, syncopated percussion. These elements are still present in today’s dubstep productions, but the genre has since evolved to include a wider range of influences and styles.
One of the earliest and most influential producers associated with dubstep is Skream, whose 2001 track “Midnight Request Line” is considered a classic in the genre. Other notable early dubstep producers include Zed Bias, Benga, and Artwork. In 2004, dubstep began to gain mainstream attention after being featured onBBC Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs’ show Warrior Dubz. This exposure led to increased popularity for the genre, particularly among London’s clubgoers.
As dubstep continued to grow in popularity, a number of subgenres emerged, including darkstage (characterized by dark, eerie soundscapes), nu-skool (a more melodic and soulful style), and wonky (a quirkier offshoot that often incorporates elements of hip hop and R&B). In recent years, dubstep has also been influenced by trap music, resulting in a new subgenre known as trap-Step or just trapstyle.
Today, dubstep is enjoyed by electronic music fans all over the world. The genre has produced some mainstream hits—such as Skrillex’s “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites”—and continues to evolve and diversify as new producers bring their own unique sounds and styles to the table.
