People that like grunge music are called “Grunge fans” or “Grungeheads”. The term “Grunge” was first used in print by music writer Kurt Loder in his 1992 article “Grunge: The Dirty Sound of Seattle” in the magazine Rolling Stone.

What is grunge music?

Grunge is a subgenre of alternative rock and a subculture that emerged during the mid-1980s in the Pacific Northwest U.S. state of Washington, particularly in Seattle and nearby towns. The early grunge movement revolved around Seattle’s independent record label Sub Pop and the region’s underground music scene. By the early 1990s its popularity had spread, with grunge bands appearing in California, then emerging in other parts of the United States and in Australia, building strong followings and signing major record deals.

The history of grunge music

The term “grunge” was first used in print in the Seattle fanzine Desperate Times in 1985, when editor Mark Arm described the submissions he was receiving: “Most of the stuff that’s been coming lately has been, well, grunge … desperate, depressed and downtuned.” The word likely came from Arm’s use of “grungy” to describe how dirty and scruffy his apartment was. It also could have come from his love of the Melvins, who were a big influence on many of the early grunge bands.

The first use of the term in music was by Green River, who named their EP Dry as a Bone in 1986. The album featured songs about drug addiction and other bleak subjects, set to a very heavy and slow musical sound. This would become one of the defining characteristics of grunge music.

Grunge became a movement in Seattle in the late 1980s, with bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains leading the way. These bands brought grunge to the mainstream with their hits “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, “Alive”, “Black Hole Sun” and “Would?”. Grunge quickly became one of the most popular genres of music in the early 1990s.

Grunge music is characterized by its heavy sound and lyrics about dark subjects like depression, addiction and suicide. Grunge bands were often seen as a reaction against the excesses of popular 80s hair metal bands. The grunge look was also a reaction against 80s fashion trends, with flannel shirts and ripped jeans becoming everyday wear for many young people in Seattle.

Despite its popularity, grunge music fell out of fashion in the mid-1990s and only a few hardy bands have continued to play this type of music since then.
