Persian Pop music has been rising in popularity in the past few years. Some of 2016’s best hits include “Ay Jaanam” by Mohsen Yeganeh, “Yeki Bood, Yeki Nabood” by Mansour, and “Ey Joonam” by Reza Sadeghi. Persian Pop music often has a mix of Persian and Western influences.

Googoosh

Googoosh is a legendary Iranian singer and actress who started her career in the 1960s. She was exiled from Iran after the Iranian Revolution in 1979, but her music continued to be popular in her home country. In 2016, she released a new album called “Behesht” (Heaven), which topped the charts in Iran. Her song “Maneh” (I’m leaving) was also a huge hit in 2016.

Ebi

Ebi is a Persian pop singer. He was born in Tehran, Iran, in 1949. His father was a government official and his mother was a housewife. Ebi began playing piano at the age of five and by the age of ten he was already playing in Iranians’ homes and restaurants. After the Iranian Revolution in 1979, Ebi’s career took off. He released his first album, “Khaneh”, in 1980. The album was an instant success, selling over one million copies.

Hayedeh

Hayedeh (Persian: هایده‎) (born Masoumeh Bakhtiaripour; April 15, 1942 – January 8, 1990) was an Iranian singer and one of the most popular and influential Iranian vocalists with a career spanning more than three decades. Hayedeh’s first public performance came at the age of 16, singing “Leyli Jan” at a Nowruz celebration in Tehran. This performance sparked her interest in becoming a professional singer. In 1962, Hayedeh sang for the first time on Iranian national television. Shortly thereafter, she became one of Iran’s most popular singers and released her first album, Talagh (Persian: تلفظ‎), in 1963.

During her career, Hayedeh released over 50 albums of both traditional Persian music and modern pop music. Her signature style incorporated classical Persian singing techniques with modern musical arrangements. She often collaborated with famous Iranian composers such as Ruhollah Khaleghi, Hassan Shamaizadeh, and Iraj Mirza. Her best-known song is “Ey Iran” (Persian: ای ایران‎), which has become an iconic patriotic anthem in Iran.

Hayedeh’s success came to a sudden halt with the Iranian Revolution in 1979. Like many other artists in Iran, she was forced to retire from public life and her work was banned from radio and television. Following the revolution, Hayedeh settled in Los Angeles, California where she lived until her death in 1990.

Dariush

Dariush is a Persian singer, songwriter, composer and actor. He began his career in the late 1960s and has released more than 40 albums. His most recent album, Chehreh, was released in 2016.

Dariush has been praised for his “emotive voice” and “powerful lyrics”, and has been described as “Iran’s most enduring and popular entertainer”. He has won numerous awards, including the Golden Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival for his work in the film Leila (1996).

Dariush was born in Tehran, Iran, on February 4, 1950. He began his musical career at the age of 17, when he joined the band The Black Cats. The band’s first album, Dokhtare Black Cat (The Black Cat’s Daughter), was released in 1967.

In 1969, Dariush embarked on a solo career with the release of his debut album, Daricheh (The Road). His second album, Gol-e Yakh (Ice Flower), was released in 1970.

Dariush’s third album, Ey Iran (Oh Iran), was released in 1971. The album featured the hit single “Ey Iran”, which became an anthem for the Iranian Revolution.

During the 1970s, Dariush made several films with director Parviz Kimiavi. In 1976, he starred in Gavaznha (Wheels), a film about a group of young Iranians who take to the streets on bicycles to protest the Shah’s regime. The film was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.

In 1980, Dariush starred in another Kimiavi film, Bacheha-ye Aseman (Children of Heaven). The film tells the story of a poor boy who must share his shoes with his sister after they are lost. Children of Heaven was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

In 1988, Dariush starred in Jahan Nama Cinema (The Name of World Cinema), a documentary about Iranian cinema that won several international awards. In 1996, he starred in Leila , a film about an Iranian woman who is forced to prostitution to support her family. The film won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.

Dariush has continued to release new albums throughout his career. His most recent album, Chehreh (The Face), was released in 2016.

Mahasti

Mahasti ( Persian: مهستی‎, also Romanized as Mahastī) was an Iranian Singer .

Born in Tehran, Iran. Her father, Morteza Kazemian, was a musician and her mother was a homemaker. Mahasti began her musical career at the age of eighteen when she joined the band of Anoushiravan Rohani. She recorded her first album, “Forough-e-Yaar”, in 1974 with Rohani.

Hayedeh

During her lifetime she was celebrated as a Persian music diva and one of the most popular singers in Iran. In the West, she is best known for her 1972 hit song “Gole Yakh” which became popular among Iranian immigrants following the Iranian Revolution in 1979. She also recorded “Salame Akh”, “Ey kash”, “Bebakhshid kon”, and “Khodahafez eshgh”.

Born in Shiraz, Iran, Hayedeh began her musical career at a young age. She began singing at the age of five and by thirteen she had made her first public appearance on Iranian radio. After completing high school, Hayedeh attended Tehran University where she studied aesthetics and psychology. She later joined Radio Tehran as a vocalist where she became one of Iran’s most popular singers.

During her career Hayedeh recorded over 200 songs, many of which became hits in Iran. Her best known song, “Gole Yakh”, was released in 1972 and quickly became a favorite among Iranians. The song is about lost love and features Hayedeh’s trademark powerful vocal performance.

Hayedeh’s success continued throughout the 1970s with hits such as “Salame Akh”, “Ey kash”, and “Bebakhshid kon”. However, her career was cut short by her untimely death in 1990 at the age of 54. Dariush

Dariush is an Iranian pop singer, songwriter and actor. He has been very popular in Iran since the 1970s, and his songs often address social and political issues. Dariush has released over 40 albums, and has acted in over 30 movies and television shows.

Mahasti

Mahasti was an Iranian singer and one of the most popular and respected Persian pop vocalists of all time. Born in Tehran in 1948, Mahasti began her musical career at a young age, singing on the local radio station. She quickly rose to prominence, releasing her first album in 1966. Mahasti’s voice was unique and instantly recognizable, and her style influenced a generation of Iranian singers. She continued to record and perform until her untimely death in 2006.

During her forty-year career, Mahasti released over thirty albums and countless singles. Her signature sound was a blend of Persian traditional music and Western pop, which she often performed with a live band.
