We welcome all levels of musicians, from beginners to experienced performers. If you enjoy playing or listening to folk music, we hope you will join us at one of our upcoming events!

What is folk music?

Folk music is the traditional music of a culture that is passed down orally from generation to generation. It is often based on stories and legends, and it usually has a strong connection to the land where it originates. Folk music can be played on a variety of instruments, but it is often acoustic and uses simple melodies.

The Peterborough Folk Music Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the appreciation and understanding of folk music in the community. We offer a variety of events and activities throughout the year, including concerts, workshops, dances, and jam sessions. We also have an extensive folk music library that is available for members to use.

The history of the Peterborough Folk Music Society

The Peterborough Folk Music Society was founded in 1951 by a group of local music lovers. They were inspired by the great folk music revival of the 1950s, which was led by artists such as Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Lead Belly. The Society’s mission is to promote and preserve the traditional folk music of Canada and the United States.

The Society is a non-profit organization run entirely by volunteers. Over the years, they have organized concerts, dances, workshops, and other events featuring some of the most talented folk musicians from all over North America. The Society has also played an important role in preserving the folk music heritage of Peterborough and the Kawarthas region.

In recent years, the Peterborough Folk Music Society has been working hard to promote traditional folk music among young people. They offer free concerts for school groups and support local musicians who are keeping the folk music tradition alive.
