The characters
The Phantom of the Opera is a 1925 American silent horror film adaptation of Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra, directed by Rupert Julian and starring Lon Chaney in the title role of the deformed Phantom who haunts the Paris Opera House, causing murder and mayhem in an attempt to make the woman he loves, Christine Daaé, a famous singer.
The film remains most famous for Chaney’s innovative make-up, which was designed to produce a realistic image of a disfigured man. His make-up for The Phantom included wax to build up his cheekbones, cotton to pad out his sunken cheeks and Jolson’s blackface greasepaint to darken his skin. For the scenes where he removes his mask, dry ice was used to fill in the sunken areas around his eyes.
The film was Universal Pictures’ first big budget production and their first film version of Leroux’s novel. It was also their most successful silent film, grossing $4 million at the box office. The popularity of the novel and its subsequent adaptations has led some maintaining that it established certain permanent cinematic conventions related to horror films produced by Universal during the 1930s. These include Gothic atmosphere; somber events taking place during stormy nights; castles or old mansions as sinister locations; grandiose staircases as perfect sites for dramatic confrontations; damsels in distress requiring rescuing from an evil genius; and climactic scenes featuring spectacular special effects designed to terrify audiences.

The lyrics
Music of the night
Lyrics by Charles Hart, Richard Stilgoe
(Mysterious music)
(Spoken)
Sing once again with me
The song of the night
Quiet and empty, save for the sound
Of the music of the night.
(Sung)
Softly, swiftly,
Flow the days.
Seldom heard are the angels’ voices.
Now they come to awake us from our slumbers.
Bid you farewell till we meet once more.
There’s music in the nights as activating,
As a composer to his instrument. (instrumental break) Darkness wakes and stirs imagination! Dreams upon dreams aspire! Embrace the magic that lurks in shadows: The music of the night!

The Phantom of the Opera: music of the night lyrics
I know the shadows hide you
And I know that you’re afraid
But there’s nothing to fear love
If you just stay with me
And I will keep you safe from harm
And I will keep you warm
I will be your shelter from the storm
So let me sing you the music of the night
And I will hold you close and tight
And we’ll dance until the morning light
I am the phantom of the opera
And I will love you forever more
