The Phantom of the Opera is a novel by French writer Gaston Leroux. It was first published as a serialization in Le Gaulois from September 23, 1909, to January 8, 1910. The novel was published in book form in late March 1910 by Pierre Lafitte and quickly became an international success.
The novel tells the story of a young soprano named Christine DaaĆ© who becomes the obsession of a mask-wearing, disfigured musical genius known only as “the Phantom.” The Phantom falls in love with Christine and, to ensure that she will always love him, secretly takes her away to live with him beneath the Paris Opera House.
The novel has been adapted into numerous film and stage productions, most notably Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1986 musical. The Phantom of the Opera was also one of the first books I ever read, and it’s one of my all-time favorites.
