The Phantom of the Opera
The Phantom of the Opera is a musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe. Based on the eponymous French novel by Gaston Leroux, its central character is a masked figure who, shunned by society, haunts the Paris Opera House. The Phantom of the Opera became the longest-running musical in Broadway history after opening in 1988.
The Story
The Phantom of the Opera is a novel by Gaston Leroux. The novel was first published in serial form in the newspaper Le Gaulois from September 23, 1909 to January 8, 1910. The story was then published in book form in 1910.
The novel is set at the Paris Opera House during the late 19th century. It tells the story of a young woman named Christine Daae who is being tutored by a mysterious man known as “the phantom”. The phantom falls in love with Christine and tries to force her to love him back. When Christine rejects him, the phantom takes her prisoner and threatens to kill everyone at the opera house unless she agrees to be his wife.
The novel has been adapted into numerous stage and screen productions, including an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical which has become one of the longest-running musicals in history.
The Characters
The story of The Phantom of the Opera is set in Paris, France in the late 19th century. The action takes place at the Palais Garnier, the Paris Opera House. The building is haunted by a ghostly figure known as the phantom.
The phantom is a disfigured man who hides his face behind a mask. He is obsessed with a beautiful singer named Christine Daaé. The phantom befriends Christine and convinces her that he is her “angel of music.” He teaches her to sing and she quickly becomes a star.
The phantom grows jealous when Christine falls in love with Raoul, a young vicomte. He kidnaps Christine and takes her to his secret lair beneath the opera house. He plans to force her to marry him, but she escapes and runs back to Raoul.
The phantom is heartbroken and enraged. He causes a chandelier to fall on the audience during one of Christine’s performances. He also starts a fire that destroys part of the opera house.
Despite his threats, Christine marries Raoul and they live happily ever after. The phantom disappears into the night, never to be seen again.

3. “Little Lotte/The Mirror” – In this song, the Phantom is talking to himself in front of a mirror. He is obsessed with his own reflection and believes that he is deformed and ugly.
