About the Show

The Phantom of the Opera is a musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Charles Hart. The book was originally published as a serialization in “Le Grand Guignol” magazine from September 1923 to January 1925.

The story revolves around a beautiful soprano, Christine Daaé, who becomes the obsession of a disfigured musical genius known as “The Phantom” who lives beneath the Paris Opéra House. The Phantom falls in love with Christine and vows to make her a star, but his dark past and controlling ways drive her away.

The score of The Phantom of the Opera includes some of Webber’s best-known songs, such as “The Music of the Night”, “All I Ask of You”, and “Think of Me”.

About the Music

The Phantom of the Opera is a musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Charles Hart. Based on the novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra by Gaston Leroux, its central character is a deformed man who hides in the catacombs of the Paris Opera House, exercising control over all aspects of the theatre.

The musical debuted in London’s West End in 1986, and on Broadway in 1988. It won the 1986 Olivier Award and the 1988 Tony Award for Best Musical. It is the longest running musical in Broadway history by a wide margin, and celebrated its 10,000th Broadway performance on 11 February 2012, making it one of only five musicals to have achieved this milestone.

The music of The Phantom of the Opera has been released in several recordings. The most successful and well-known version is derived from the original cast recording, which was released by Polydor Records in 1987 and won that year’s Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. This recording features Australian actor Michael Crawford as the Phantom and American actress Sarah Brightman as Christine Daaé.
