The Plot

The Phantom of the Opera is a novel by French writer Gaston Leroux. It was first published as a serialization in Le Gaulois from September 23, 1909, to January 8, 1910. The novel was published in volume form in late March 1910 by Pierre Lafitte. It was then translated into English and published in 1911 by Harper.

The novel is partly inspired by historical events at the Paris Opera during the nineteenth century and an apocryphal tale concerning the use of a trapdoor during a performance of Daniel Auber’s La muette de Portici (1828). It has been successfully adapted into various stage and film productions, most notably Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical.

The novel tells of a grotesquely disfigured man known as the Phantom who terrorizes the Paris Opera House, particularly the singers with whom he is obsessed. The Phantom falls in love with Christine Daaé, a beautiful young soprano singer, and becomes obsessively jealous when she shows interest in Raoul de Chagny, another suitor.

The Phantom abducts Christine and keeps her imprisoned in his underground lair beneath the opera house. As Christine slowly succumbs to his demands and begins to reciprocate his affections, the pair narrowly escape detection by led by Raoul. However, their happiness is short-lived as the Phantom soon abducts Christine again, this time for good.
