The Symbols
There are three main symbols in the phantom of the opera: the chandelier, the mask, and the rose.
-The Chandelier: The chandelier is a very important symbol in the phantom of the opera. It is a representation of the phantom himself. The chandelier is first seen when it crashes down during the phantom’s first appearance. It is also seen later when the phantom brings it down on purpose to create a distraction so he can kidnap Christine. The chandelier is also a symbol of hope. At the end of the story, when Raoul and Christine are about to escape from the phantom, they see the chandelier rise up and follow them as they leave. This could represent that even though the phantom is evil, there is still some good in him.
-The Mask: The mask is another important symbol in the story. It represents both the phantom’s physical deformity and his inner deformity. The phantom wears a mask because he is ashamed of his face and he doesn’t want anyone to see it. The mask also represents how he feels about himself on the inside. He feels like he is not good enough for Christine and that she deserves better than him.
-The Rose: The rose is a symbol of Christine’s love for Raoul. When Christine was younger, her father would always give her a red rose whenever she did something well. After her father died, Raoul started giving her red roses to try to make her feel better. When Christine goes back to visit Raoul after she has been abducted by the phantom, she gives him a red rose as a sign that she still loves him.
