Introduction

The ’90s was a big decade for pop music. While some artists from the ’80s managed to hang on to their success, others fell by the wayside, and new faces quickly took their place at the top of the charts. From boy bands to girl groups to solo singers, there was no shortage of talented pop artists in the ’90s.

Topping our list of the top 10 pop artists of the ’90s is none other than the king of pop himself, Michael Jackson. Jackson’s Thriller album is still the best-selling album of all time, and he had a string of other hits in the ’90s, including “Black or White” and “Heal the World.” Next up is Mariah Carey, who rose to fame in the early ’90s with her debut album and hit single “Vision of Love.” Carey would go on to have one of the most successful careers in pop music history, with hits like “Always Be My Baby” and “One Sweet Day.”

At number three is Whitney Houston, who dominated the charts in the ’80s but continued to enjoy success in the ’90s with singles like “I Will Always Love You” and “Exhale (Shoop Shoop).” Next on our list is Celine Dion, who emerged as a global superstar in the mid-’90s with her album Falling Into You and its groundbreaking single “My Heart Will Go On.” Madonna rounds out our top five; although she didn’t have any Number One hits in the ’90s, she remained one of the biggest names in pop music with hits like “Vogue” and ” Ray of Light.”

Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and record producer. Born in huntington, new york, she began her career in 1990. After signing to columbia records, she released her debut album, mariah carey, which topped the billboard 200 album chart. Carey followed this success with the release of her second album, emotions (1991), which spawned the number-one singles “vision of love” and “emotions”.

Celine Dion

Celine Dion is a Canadian singer and songwriter. She is one of the best-selling artists of all time, with record sales of over 200 million copies worldwide. She has won five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year. Dion is also a widely successful commercial artist, with her songs appearing in numerous commercials and film soundtracks. She has been nominated for two Academy Awards, winning Best Original Song for “My Heart Will Go On” from the film Titanic.

Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston is without a doubt one of the top pop artists of the ’90s. She released her debut album in 1985, and it quickly went platinum. Her follow-up album, Whitney, was even more successful, and she became a global superstar. With hits like “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” “I Will Always Love You,” and “Exhale (Shoop Shoop),” Houston dominated the pop charts throughout the decade. She sold over 200 million records worldwide and won numerous awards, including five Grammy Awards.

TLC

One of the most successful American pop groups of the ’90s, TLC was also one of the most unconventional. Combining elements of new jack swing, hip-hop, and R&B, the Atlanta-based trio became a sensation with their debut album, _Ooooooohhh… On the TLC Tip_ (1992). _CrazySexyCool_ (1994) cemented their reputation as trendsetting hitmakers, thanks to such hits as “Waterfalls” and “Creep.” Although personal tragedies – the death of Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes in a car accident in 2002 and ongoing health issues for Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas – would eventually take their toll on the group, TLC continued to be a formidable presence on the charts with _FanMail_ (1999) and _3D_ (2002).

Spice Girls

NoGroup was as big as the Spice Girls in the ’90s. The all-female British pop group took the world by storm with their catchy hooks, sassy attitude and girl power anthems. The group became a global phenomenon with their debut album, “Spice,” which sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. The album spawned numerous hits, including “Wannabe,” “Say You’ll Be There” and “2 Become 1.” The group’s follow-up album, “Spiceworld,” was also a huge success, selling more than 13 million copies worldwide. The Spice Girls went on to release two more albums before disbanding in 2000.

Backstreet Boys

The Backstreet Boys were an American boy band that rose to prominence in the late 1990s. The group originally consisted of A. J. McLean, Howie Dorough, Nick Carter, Brian Littrell, and Kevin Richardson. The quintet debuted with their international self-titled album in 1996. It sold over 24 million copies worldwide and is one of the best-selling albums of all time. In the United States, the album peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 chart and was later certified diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

She released her self-titled debut album in 1999, which spawned the hits “Genie in a Bottle” and “What a Girl Wants.” Aguilera followed up her debut with 2000’s “Mi Reflejo,” which featured the hit single “Reflection.” Her third album, “Stripped,” was released in 2002 and featured the hits “Fighter” and “Beautiful.” Aguilera has sold over 50 million records worldwide and has won five Grammy Awards.

Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson was one of the most popular pop artists of the ’90s. She released a string of hits, including “Rhythm Nation,” “That’s the Way Love Goes,” and “Together Again.” Jackson also won several Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
