Kiss was founded by Gordon Mac McGillivray and his business partner Rick Newcombe in October 1985. The first station to launch was Kiss 102 in Manchester, which began broadcasting on 23 August 1986.

The original line-up of DJs on the station included Steve Jackson, Sammy Jackson, Darren Proctor, Robbie Craig and Dave Randall. In 1988, the station’s parent company produced the first Kiss album, titled Alive with Kiss FM which featured many of the station’s most popular DJs.
