Hard rock

The Psychedelic Furs are an English rock band founded in 1977. The mainstay of the band is singer Richard Butler, who founded the group with his brother Tim Butler on bass guitar. Originally, they were part of the British post-punk scene with other bands such as Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees and the Cure. However, their sound developed into something more radio-friendly by the early 1980s.

The Psychedelic Furs are known for their 1981 hit single “Pretty in Pink,” which was later used as the title track and theme song for the 1986 John Hughes film Pretty in Pink. The band has continued to tour and release new music over the past three decades, and their influence can be heard in the work of modern hard rock acts such as the Killing Joke, Nine Inch Nails and Interpol.

New wave

New Wave is a genre of rock music popular in the late 1970s and the 1980s with ties to mid-1970s punk rock. New wave moved away from blues and rock and roll sounds to create pop music that incorporated electronic and experimental music, mod, disco, and pop. Initially new wave was similar to punk rock, before becoming more radio-friendly with artists such as Blondie, the Cars, and Talking Heads.

Post-punk

Post-punk is a type of rock music that emerged in the late 1970s as a reaction against punk rock. The term “post-punk” was first used by music critic Simon Reynolds in his 1981 publication Rip It Up and Start Again: Postpunk 1978–1984, which described the era as a “schismatic” moment within popular music.

Characteristically, post-punk groups rejected the standard rock and roll template of guitars, bass, and drums; instead, they experimented with a wide range of instrumentation and song structures. In addition to featuring unconventional instrumentation, post-punk groups often eschewed traditional song structures in favor of more experimental arrangements.

Common themes among post-punk groups include urban decay, anxiety, isolation, and paranoia. Many post-punk groups were also influenced by anarchism, existentialism, and Surrealism.
