The Psychedelic Furs are an English rock band founded in London in February 1977. Led by singer Richard Butler and his brother Tim Butler on bass guitar, the Psychedelic Furs are one of the many acts spawned from the British post-punk and new wave scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s. The band’s music went through several phases, from an initially austere art rock sound, to later touching on new wave, glam rock, and neo-psychedelia.

The band was founded in February 1977 after Richard Butler’s brother Tim (on bass) saw them play live. The Psychedelic Furs toured throughout 1977–78, appearing on the punk rock TV show So It Goes, before signing with Columbia Records in 1979. The band was part of the British New Wave movement.

Their self-titled debut album was released in March 1980 to positive reviews; it reached No. 18 on Billboard’s Top 100 chart and No. 5 in the UK. Three songs from that album were released as singles: “India”, “Sister Europe”, and “Fall”; all charted in the UK Top 40.

The follow-up album, Talk Talk Talk, produced the hit singles “Radio Free Europe” (originally a single only in continental Europe) and “Pretty in Pink”. ” Pretty in Pink” was used as a title track for John Hughes’ 1986 film Pretty In Pink which starred Molly Ringwald; it reached No. 2 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks chart as well as No. 11 on its Hot 100 chart and No. 18 on its Adult Contemporary chart; meanwhile, it peaked at number three for three weeks on both sides of the Atlantic ocean: number three on Mainstream Rock Tracks for two weeks (behind Motley Crue 4 Snorting mad bulls’) & number three on Billboard Hot 100 for one week (behind Madonna 2 Live To Tell’).
