Introduction

Psychic Ills is a psychedelic rock band from Brooklyn, New York City, formed in 2004. The band currently consists of founding members Tres Warren (vocals, guitar) and Elizabeth Hart (bass, vocals), as well as Ian Astbury (drums) and Rebeca White (percussion). Psychic Ills’ music has been described as “drone-heavy space rock” and “stoner pop”.

The band’s debut album Dins was released in 2006 to critical acclaim. The follow-up album, One Track Mind, was released in 2008, and the band’s third album, Hazed Dream, was released in 2010. Psychic Ills’ fourth album, Inner Journeys Outer Lands, was released in 2013 to further critical acclaim. The band’s most recent album, Beyond All SunsWhich Way is East?, was released in 2016.

History

The Brooklyn-based psychedelic rock band, Moon Hooch, was formed in 2004 by Wenzl McGowen and Mike Wilbur, two students at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. The band’s name was inspired by the nickname given to Wilbur by his fellow students, which referred to the large, bushy eyebrows he shares with actor Rick Moranis. The band’s music is a mix of jazz, blues, and electronic dance music, and has been compared to the likes of Pretty Lights and Lotus.

Formation

Psychedelic rock band from Brooklyn, New York City, formed in 2004. The band began as a street performing duo consisting of guitarist/singer-songwriter Elliott Sharp and drummer/multi-instrumentalist G. Calvin Weston. They soon recruited bassist Doug Wieselman and started playing clubs in NYC, Hoboken, and Jersey City. In 2005 they released their eponymous debut album on Elliott’s own label, IPNULL. The group has since toured extensively throughout Europe, Japan, Russia, and the US. They have released four more albums: 2007’s Actual Reenactment, 2010’s In Advance of the Broken Arm, 2012’s Refactor, and 2014’s Unnatural Ways. The band has been described as “a punishingly tight power trio that delivers Elliott Sharp’s fractured but accessible compositions with metronomic precision and head-spinning enthusiasm.”

First album

Psychedelic rock band Animal Collective released their first album, Here Comes the Indian, in 2003. The album was met with critical acclaim, and the band’s unique sound and experimental approach to songwriting and production won them a devoted following. Here Comes the Indian is considered a seminal work in the “psych-folk” genre, and its influence can be heard in the music of subsequent generations of artists.

Second album

In June 2007, the band released their second album, entitled Arrow. The album was recorded in Woodstock, New York at producer Adam Lasus’s Klangbad Studios (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Yo La Tengo, Helium). Kinf expresses his excitement about the new album, saying “The songs on Arrow are way more personal and about my own life experiences than anything I’ve ever written before.” The first single from the album is entitled “Gold” and was released to radio on May 22.

The band is currently composed of lead vocalist/guitarist Wayne Coyne, guitarist Steven Drozd, bassist Michael Ivins, and drummer Kliph Scurlock.

The Sound was founded in 2004 by Coyne and Ivins, who had previously been members of the Flaming Lips. The two were looking to start a new project that would be more guitar-driven than the Lips. They were later joined by Drozd, who had also been a member of the Lips since 1991. The three had all been friends for years prior to forming the band.

The Sound’s debut album, She Sleeps, was released in 2004 to positive reviews. The album was followed by 2006’s Playing With Fire and 2008’s Animal Collective. The band has toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe over the past decade, and remains an active live act today.

Influences

Psychedelic rock, often called psychedelia, is a diverse style of rock music inspired, influenced, or representative of psychedelic culture, which is centred on perception-altering hallucinogenic drugs. The music is intended to replicate and enhance the mind-altering experiences of psychedelic drugs, most notably LSD. Many psychedelic groups differ in style, and the label is often applied spuriously.

Psychedelic rock developed out of the folk rock and blues rock movements of the late 1960s, and reached its peak in popularity between 1967 and 1969. It was inspired by IndianRate music as well as British Beat music. Psychedelic bands used distorted electric guitars, electronic effects such as feedback and wah wah pedals; flute solos were common in folk-influenced strains as were Hawaiian slack key guitars in surf-influenced strains…

The band was formed in 2004 by George Coleman (lead vocals, guitar), Jeffery Morrisroe (bass guitar), and Jonathan Hockaday (drums). The three had all been previously involved in the music scene in Raleigh, North Carolina.After moving to Brooklyn, the trio began playing shows around the city.

The band’s debut album, 13th Street Promenade, was released in 2005. The album was recorded in Coleman’s bedroom and was self-released on the band’s own label, Curious Sounds.

The band’s second album, 2nd & 3rd Street, was released in 2006. The album was again self-released on Curious Sounds.

In 2007, the band signed with Atlantic Records and released their third album, Third Avenue & Third Street. The album was produced by Dave Sardy and received generally positive reviews from critics.

The band’s fourth album, Four Way Stop sign & red light ,was released in 2009. The album was again produced by Dave Sardy and received generally positive reviews from critics.
Fourth Avenue & Third Street peaked at number 74 on the Billboard 200 chart.

The band’s fifth studio album,’5th & 6th Street’,was released in 2012 . It peaked at number 22 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Chart

Discography

The Brooklyn-based quartet of music artists known as The Dixie Chicks released their first album in 1998. The album, entitled “Wide Open Spaces”, was an immediate success, debuting at number one on the Billboard Country Albums chart and selling over four million copies in the United States.
