The History of Psychedelic Rock

Psychedelic rock, also referred to as psych rock or acid rock, is a type of rock music that emerged in the mid-1960s and became popular in the United States and Britain. The genre is characterized by distorted guitars, time changes, extended solos, and trippy lyrics.

The first psychedelic band is generally considered to be The Grateful Dead, who began playing in 1965. Other important early psychedelic bands include Jefferson Airplane, The Doors, and The Byrds. Psychedelic rock reached its peak in popularity in the late 1960s with the release of albums such as The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967), Pink Floyd’s The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967), and Jimi Hendrix’s Are You Experienced (1967).

The genre began to decline in popularity in the early 1970s as bands moved away from psychedelia and towards more compact song structures. However, certain psychedelic bands such as Hawkwind and Amon Düül II remained popular throughout the 1970s. Psychedelic rock made a brief comeback in the 1980s with the formation of neo-psychedelia bands such as The Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine.
