Psychedelic rock and progressive rock are two very different genres of music. Many people debate which one is better, but there is no clear winner.

Psychedelic Rock

Psychedelic rock, also referred to as simply psychedelia, is a subgenre of rock music that originated in the 1960s. The style is characterized by a preoccupation with psychedelic (often drug-induced) experiences and hallucinations, unconventional song structures, and extended instrumental sections.

The Beatles

The Beatles were an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960. They became the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed band in history. Rooted in skiffle and 1950s rock and roll, the Beatles later utilised several genres ranging from pop ballads topsychedelic and hard rock. In the early 1960s, their enormous popularity first emerged as “Beatlemania”, but as their songwriting grew in sophistication their artistic credo and commercial appeal expanded as well. During their time at the height of their popularity, the group were referred to as “the Fab Four”, owing to their closely linked style of music.

The Doors

The Doors were an American rock band formed in 1965 in Los Angeles, with vocalist Jim Morrison, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger, and drummer John Densmore. They were one of the most controversial and influential rock acts of the 1960s because of Morrison’s cryptic lyrics and charismatic but unpredictable stage persona. After forming in 1965, the group signed with Elektra Records in 1966.

The Doors’ self-titled debut album was released that same year and became one of the best-selling debut albums ever, selling more than three million copies in the U.S. It spawned three top 40 singles: “Light My Fire”, “Break On Through (To the Other Side)”, and “The End”. Due to the success of their debut album, The Doors were asked to perform at the Monterrey Pop Music Festival in 1967.

In 1968, The Doors released their second album, Strange Days which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart and produced two top 30 singles: “People Are Strange” and “Love Me Two Times”. The group’s third album, Waiting for the Sun (1968), became their fourth consecutive No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and spawned two top 40 singles: “Hello, I Love You” and “Touch Me”.

In 1969, The Doors released their fifth studio album, The Soft Parade. It reached No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart but sales were not as strong as their previous albums due to creative differences within the band during its recording. Their sixth album, Morrison Hotel (1970), was received more favorably by critics but failed to achieve commercial success.”

Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd is often cited as one of the most influential bands in the history of psychedelic rock. Formed in London in 1965, the band was at the forefront of the British psychedelic scene, and their legendary 1967 album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is considered one of the most important psychedelic documents of all time. Pink Floyd continued to experiment with mind-expanding soundscapes throughout their career, and they remain one of the most revered bands in psychedelic rock history.

Progressive Rock

Prog, short for progressive, is a broad genre of rock music that developed in the United Kingdom and United States throughout the mid to late 1960s. Modeled after psychedelic and blues rock, the genre often incorporates elements of classical music and jazz, and uses lengthy, frequently improvised jams.

King Crimson

King Crimson is a progressive rock band that was founded in 1968 by guitarist Robert Fripp and drummer Michael Giles. The band has undergone numerous lineup changes over the years, with Fripp being the only constant member. King Crimson’s early sound was rooted in psychedelic rock, but they later developed a more complex and experimental style that was influenced by jazz and classical music. They have been influential to many subsequent artists, including Yes, Genesis, Rush, and Porcupine Tree.

Yes

Progressive rock, sometimes called psychedelia, is a style of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Musically, it is characterized by complex arrangements, long instrumentals, and often unusual time signatures. Lyrically, it is often concerned with issues of philosophy, religion, and social commentary.

Progressive rock was initially met with skepticism by the establishment, but it eventually found an audience among music fans who were looking for something more than the standard fare of pop and rock music. In the 1980s and 1990s, progressive rock experienced a renewed interest, with bands like Porcupine Tree and Dream Theater gaining popularity.

So which is better: progressive rock or psychedelic rock? There is no easy answer, as both styles have their merits. It really depends on what you are looking for in your music. If you want something that is complex and challenging, then progressive rock may be for you. If you are looking for something that is more accessible and easier to listen to, then psychedelic rock may be a better choice. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide which style of music you prefer.

Genesis

Genesis was a progressive rock band that formed in 1967 in England. The band members were Peter Gabriel (vocals, flute), Tony Banks (keyboards), Mike Rutherford (bass, guitar), and Phil Collins (drums). The band was one of the most successful progressive rock bands of all time, selling over 150 million albums worldwide. Genesis is known for their complex song structures, intricate instrumentation, and theatrical live shows. The band released their debut album, From Genesis to Revelation, in 1969. Their 1971 album, Nursery Cryme, is considered to be their breakthrough album and features the hits “The Knife” and “For Absent Friends”. 1973’s Selling England by the Pound is Genesis’ most commercially successful album and features the hit single “I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)”. 1974’s The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is a double album that is conceptually based on the story of a Puerto Rican youth named Rael who goes on an odyssey through New York City. The album was not as commercially successful as Selling England by the Pound but is considered to be one of Genesis’ best albums by fans and critics alike. 1976’s A Trick of the Tail was Genesis’ first album with new lead singer Phil Collins and was also their first album to reach the top 10 in the UK. 1977’s Wind & Wuthering peaked at #7 in the UK and features the hit single “Your Own Special Way”. 1978’s …And Then There Were Three… was another UK top 10 album for Genesis and features the hits “Follow You Follow Me” and “Many Too Many”. 1980’s Duke was another UK top 10 album for Genesis and features the hits “Misunderstanding” and “Turn It On Again”. 1982’s Three Sides Live is a live triple album that features songs from all of Genesis’ studio albums up to that point. 1983’s self-titled album, simply known as Genesis, reached #1 in both the UK and US and features the hit singles “Mama” and “That’s All”. 1986’s Invisible Touch was another #1 album for Genesis in both the UK and US and features 5 hit singles: “Invisible Touch”, “Land of Confusion”, “Throwing It All Away”, “Tonight Tonight Tonight”, and “In Too Deep”. 1991’s We Can’t Dance was yet another #1 album for Genesis in both the UK and US, making them one of only two bands (the other being Led Zeppelin) to have 9 consecutive #1 albums in Billboard magazine. The singles from We Can’t Dance are: “No Son of Mine”, “I Can’t Dance”, “(Keep That) Hold Out”, Jesus He Knows Me”, Never A Time”, In Too Deep”. 1997’s Calling All Stations saw changes in both personnel (lead singer Ray Wilson replaced Phil Collins) and musical direction as it strayed away from progressive rock into a more pop/rock sound. The album was not as commercially successful as previous Genesis albums but still managed to reach #3 in the UK. In 2007, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Collins ,and Gabriel reunited for a turn-it-on-again reunion tour which resulted in live performances of all nine of their consecutive number one albums being performed live over multiple nights

Which is better?

Psychedelic rock and progressive rock are two very different genres of music. Psychedelic rock is known for its trippy, mind-bending sound, while progressive rock is known for its complex, long-form compositions. So, which is better?

Progressive rock quickly spread to other parts of Europe and then to the United States. In the early 1970s, American bands such as Styx and Kansas became popular with their brand of progressive rock.

The popularity of progressive rock waned in the late 1970s as punk rock and disco became more popular. However, many progressive rock bands continued to record and tour throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Today, there is a resurgence of interest in progressive rock, with many new bands forming in the genre.
