Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26, 1939, in Nutbush, Tennessee. She began her career as a backing singer for Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm before going on to enjoy huge success as a solo artist. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.

Turner is survived by her sons Craig and Ronnie Turner, and her grandchildren Rodney and Mia.
