History
The station first went on the air in August 1943 as KLA, a 5,000-watt AM radio station broadcasting from Mount Tamalpais in Marin County. It was owned by Luther R. Prophet and his sons Luther R. Prophet Jr. and John C. Prophet, who had founded the Berkeley Beacon newspaper in Berkeley just a few months earlier in February 1943. prophet Sr.’s engineer son Charles Acker designed the station’s 1,000-foot (300 m) tall tower and five miles (8 km) of underground cable linking the transmitter to studios in Mill Valley. The new station signed on with an announcement by actor Maurice Evans: “This is Mount Tamalpais calling … KLA.”
