What is Psychedelic Rock?

Psychedelic rock is a musical genre that emerged in the late 1960s. It is characterized by distorted guitars, feedback, and extreme psychedelic effects. The genre is often associated with the counterculture of the 1960s. Psychedelic rock radio is the perfect way to enjoy the best of both worlds.

The Origins of Psychedelic Rock

Psychedelic rock, or simply “psychedelia”, is a style of rock music that emerged in the mid-1960s and reached its height of popularity in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The term is derived from the Greek words for “mind” (psyche) and “deliver” (delos), and was first coined by psychiatrist Humphry Osmond in 1956. Psychedelic rock is characterized by distorted guitars, vocals, and mind-altering lyrics and visuals, often based on drug experiences.

The earliest examples of psychedelic rock can be traced back to the early 1960s with bands such as The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Byrds, and Bob Dylan all experimenting with elements of psychedelia in their music. However, it was not until 1965 that the Grateful Dead released their landmark album Anthem of the Sun which is widely considered to be the first true psychedelic rock record. From there, the genre quickly gained popularity with bands such as Jefferson Airplane, The Doors, Pink Floyd, and Jimi Hendrix all releasing classic psychedelic albums.

In the 1970s, psychedelic rock began to lose its mainstream appeal but continued to be popular among underground and independent musicians. Today, psychedelic rock has been resurrected by a new generation of artists who are keeping the spirit of the genre alive.

The Sound of Psychedelic Rock

The sound of Psychedelic Rock is very distinctive. It usually contains elements of Electric Blues, Indian music, and Rock and Roll. The sound is often enhanced by the use of feedback, echo, and reverb. Most Psychedelic Rock songs are between three and five minutes long, and the lyrics are often about love, peace, and mind-expanding drugs.

The Best Psychedelic Rock Bands

Psychedelic rock radio might be the best thing since sliced bread. You get the best of both worlds: the music of the 60s and 70s with the modern technology of the internet. You can listen to your favorite psychedelic rock bands whenever you want, without having to search for them on the radio.

The Beatles

The Beatles were an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960. They became the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed act in the history of popular music. Their sound, rooted in skiffle, beat and 1950s rock and roll, had a wide appeal that embraced young and old. The group’s songs ranged from pop to hard rock, often incorporating classical and other forms of music.

The Beatles built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over a three-year period from 1960, with Stuart Sutcliffe initially serving as bass player. The core trio of Lennon, McCartney and Harrison, together since 1958, went through a succession of drummers—Pete Best being the best known—before asking Starr to join them in 1962. Manager Brian Epstein moulded them into a professional act ushering them towards widespread popularity on the UK’s Variety Club circuit REPLACING SUPPORT ACTS INCLUDING Gerry & The Pacemakers and Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas before taking them to the US for what proved to be a historic Shea Stadium concert in August 1965

From 1965 onwards, psychedelic influences became increasingly evident in the group’s music REPLACING EARLIER BRITISH INVASION-STYLE GUITAR-BASED POP WITH COLORFUL STUDIO PRODUCTIONS AND LONGER COMPOSITIONS THAT OFTEN EXPLORED THREE- OR FOUR-MINUTE POP SONGS TO THEIR LIMITS. In 1967 they released their groundbreaking album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band which topped many national and international charts including Billboard’s for 27 weeks REPLACING THEIR PREVIOUS LP Rubber Soul AS THE LONGEST-RUNNING NO. 1 ALBUM IN HISTORY UP TO THAT TIME as well as becoming one of the all time best selling albums worldwide with over 32 million sold copies by 2003 .

The Doors

The Doors were an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1965, with vocalist Jim Morrison, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger, and drummer John Densmore. They were unique and among the most influential groups of the 1960s, mostly because of Morrison’s lyrics and charismatic but unpredictable stage persona. After Morrison’s death in 1971, the remaining members continued as a trio until finally disbanding in 1973.

Although the Doors’ active career ended in 1973, their popularity has persisted. According to the RIAA, they have sold 33 million records in the US and over 100 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling bands of all time. The Doors have been listed as one of the greatest artists of all time by many magazines including Rolling Stone, which ranked them 41st on its list of the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time”.

Pink Floyd

pink Floyd is a Psychedelic Rock band formed in 1965. The band achieved international success with their concept albums and progressive rock sound. They are one of the most commercially successful and influential bands of all time. The band has sold over 250 million records worldwide, including 75 million in the United States alone.
