R&B and Pop Music of the ’90s

The ’90s was a decade of great music. R&B and pop music were at the forefront of the music scene. Some of the biggest names in music were from the ’90s. This section will take a look at some of the biggest R&B and pop hits of the ’90s.

The Early ’90s

In the early ’90s, the typical R&B sound began to change. Groups like Jodeci and Boyz II Men helped to usher in a new era of R&B, characterized by smooth harmonies and sensual lyrics. Their music was still rooted in soul, but it was also influenced by hip-hop. This new sound quickly became popular, and by the middle of the decade, it was one of the most dominant genres in popular music.

While R&B was beginning to change in the early ’90s, pop music was undergoing its own transformation. The arrival of Nirvana and other grunge bands signaled the end of hair metal and other pop-metal genres that had dominated the charts in the late ’80s. Grunge was a much darker and more aggressive sound than what had come before, and it quickly captured the zeitgeist of disaffected young people in the early ’90s. Along with Nirvana, bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains helped to define this new sound.

The Mid ’90s

By the mid-’90s, a new crop of R&B and pop music superstars was well on its way to becoming household names. Mariah Carey, TLC, Boyz II Men, Janet Jackson, and Whitney Houston were all churning out hits, while new jack swing was still going strong. Hip-hop also began to make inroads into the pop charts in the mid-’90s, thanks to artists like Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, and Tupac Shakur.

The Late ’90s

The late ’90s saw the continued rise of hip hop and R&B. Puff Daddy, Missy Elliott, and Destiny’s Child were among the most popular artists of the time. Pop music also saw a rise in popularity, with artists like Britney Spears and NSYNC topping the charts.
