Random information on the term “DANCEHALL”:

Dancehall is a genre of Jamaican popular music that originated in the late 1970s. Initially, dancehall was a more sparse version of reggae than the roots style, which had dominated much of the 1970s. Two of the biggest stars of the early dancehall era were Yellowman and Eek-a-Mouse. As dancers’ tastes for more up-tempo rhythms and beats began to develop, other productions began to take on these new influences. This led to a more experimental style that incorporated synthesizers, drum machines, and other sound effects that transformed the soundscape of dancehall. By the mid to late 1980s, digital instrumentation became more prevalent in dancehall music which led to even more experimental productions by artists such as Levi Roots and Jammys from producers such as Linval Thompson and Jammy . The television series Miami Vice brought awareness of Jamaican music to a worldwide audience and featured songs like Frankie Paul’s “I Know The Score”, Inner Circle’s “Bad Boys”, and Chaka Demus & Pliers’ “Murder She Wrote”. These international hits brought together Jamaican artists performing in settings that would not have been typical in earlier eras such as tracks laid over American R&B hits or tracks featuring American rap artists. This new style would be called “ragga” which blended sound systems culture with hip hop culture (and later on grime).
