Reggae developed from the earlier genres ska and rocksteady. Reggae is stronglylinked to the Rastafari movement, which developed in Jamaica in the 1930s. The term reggae is a Rastafarian word that means “the king’s music.” Reggae is usually played at a slow to moderate tempo and has a distinctive rhythm that is created by the offbeat accentuated by the bass. Reggae can be divided into three subgenres: ska, rocksteady, and roots reggae.

Ska is thefastest and most upbeat type of reggae. It wasthe first style of Jamaican popular musicand it origins can be traced back to the mento music of the 1950s. The first ska recordings were made in Jamaica in the early 1960s by artists such as Prince Buster and Byron Lee. Ska quickly spread to England in the late 1960s, where it became very popular among Mods (young people who dressed in smart clothes and rode scooters).

Rocksteady is a slower type of reggae than ska, with a smoother sound and slower tempo. It developed around 1966-67,and was named after a 1967 Alton Ellis song. Rocksteady was generally more mellow than ska, with less emphasis on the up-tempo rhythms. Some of the most popular rocksteady artists included Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe, and Delroy Wilson.

Roots reggae is slower still than rocksteady, with even deeper basslines. The lyrics are often conscious or Rastafarian in nature. Roots reggae developed in the late 1960s and 1970s, with pioneers such as Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, and Peter Tosh.

There are a number of theories as to why reggae music is so effective in calming babies. One is that the slow, steady beat of the music helps to regulate breathing and heart rate.
