Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley

Marley was born in Kingston, Jamaica, on October 21, 1978, the son of reggae artist Bob Marley and Anita Belnavis. His maternal grandfather was Canadian ice hockey player Walter “Buller” Stanchfield. He has an older sister, Cedella, and a younger half-sister, Karen. Marley’s parents separated when he was two and he was raised by his mother in Kingston’s Halfway Tree district.[5] When he was 12, his mother sent him to learn auto mechanics at a technical school. Damian was an Rastafarian.

In 1994, Marley helped form the group Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers and soon released their debut album, Play the Game Right (alsoreleased as Conscious Party in some countries). The album received critical acclaim but failed commercially.[6][7] The group went on to release several more albums: Conscious Party (1992), Free Like We Want 2 B (1993), Joy & Blues (1998), and One Bright Day (1994).

After the group disbanded in 2002,[8] Marley embarked on a solo career with the release of Welcome to Jamrock which debuted at number 7 on the Billboard 200.[9][10] The album was nominated for eight Grammy Awards winning Best Reggae Album and included the singles “Welcome to Jamrock” and “Beautiful”. In 2006 he released his second studio album entitled Distant Relatives. It features an array of artists including Nas, Mos Def, Scarlett Johansson and Bobby Womack. The album peaked at number 5 on the Billboard 200 in the US and has sold over 600,000 copies there.[11][12] It is also certified Gold in Canada[13] and United Kingdom.[14][15] His fourth studio album Black Gold debuted at number 28 on Billboard’s Hip Hop/R&B charts achieving Marley’s highest-ever charting position for a solo artist.[16]

Rebelution is a reggae band from Isla Vista, California, formed in 2004. The band’s current line-up consists of lead vocalist and guitarist Eric Rachmany, keyboardist Rory Carey, bassist Marley D.
