Chronixx – “Likes”

Chronixx’s “Likes” was one of the best reggae music videos of 2016. The video features Chronixx and his friends hanging out and having a good time. The video is shot in black and white, and the visuals are very simple. However, the simplicity of the video makes it very powerful. The black and white footage makes Chronixx’s skin look even more radiant, and it also makes the video look more classy. The “likes” in the title refer to the likes that Chronixx gets on social media, but it also refers to the love that he has for his friends and for his music. This video is a great example of how a simple concept can be executed in a beautiful way.

Kontraband – Kabaka Pyramid

If Kontraband, the excellent debut album from Kabaka Pyramid, is any indication of the state of contemporary reggae, the genre is in very good hands. The 28-year-old singer, born Kamal Smith in Kingston, Jamaica, has a liquid, easy delivery that nods to reggae’s past while also managing to sound completely modern; he’s as comfortable flowing over a slow-burning roots groove as he is a skanking dancehall riddim. He’s also an incisive lyricist, with a socially conscious bent that gives his songs extra heft; on the standout track “Can’t Breathe,” he addresses police violence and racial profiling (“Dem say dem nuh like how me look so dem wah stop and search/But when me talk seh me can’t breathe dem seh chill out man, it’s just a joke”), but even when he’s not being explicitly political, his songs are imbued with a keen sense of reality. Kabaka Pyramid is well on his way to becoming one of reggae’s most vital voices.
