In this blog post, we explore why Relient K is not a heavy metal band, despite their musical style and lyrical themes.

Introduction

Relient K is not a heavy metal band. This is a fact that is often misunderstood by fans of the group, as well as those who are unfamiliar with their music. Though the members of Relient K are self-proclaimed “metalheads,” the vast majority of their catalogue falls under the pop punk genre. In recent years, they have experimented with other styles, but have yet to release anything that could be considered heavy metal.

What is Relient K?

Relient K is an American rock band formed in 1998 in Canton, Ohio. The band is composed of Matt Thiessen, Matt Hoopes, and Jon Schneck. The band’s name comes from Thiessen’s automotive escape vehicle, a Plymouth Reliant K car. To date, the band has released fourteen studio albums: seven for Capitol Records and seven for their own label, Mono vs Stereo. They have also released one independent album, two live albums, four EPs, and ten singles. Their musical style primarily consists of rock music mixed with elements of punk rock and pop punk with occasional acoustic elements.

The group has achieved two Grammy Award nominations: Best Rock Gospel Album for Apathetic EP and Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song for “Be My Escape”. In 2006 they were nominated for a Dove Award for the same category but lost to MercyMe’s “I Can Only Imagine”.
