General rock music trivia

Rock music is a genre of popular music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, chiefly in the United Kingdom and the United States. It has its roots in 1940s and 1950s rock and roll, a style which drew heavily on the genres of blues, rhythm and blues, and from country music. Rock music also drew attention to electric guitars, particularly the invention of feedback and distortion by guitar players such as Jimi Hendrix, and influenced genres such as punk rock.

During the 1960s, a number of new rock bands formed, including the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin’s Full Tilt Boogie Band, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix’s Experience and Uriah Heep. These bands were soon followed by others including Alice Cooper, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kiss, Queen and Boston. Glam rock emerged during this period with artists such as David Bowie and Marc Bolan achieving mainstream success.

Progressive rock developed in the late 1960s as part of a wider genre which incorporated elements of classical music into rock. Bands such as Pink Floyd, Genesis and Yes were at the forefront of this movement. Hard rock developed during the 1970s with bands such as AC/DC and Deep Purple becoming popular. Punk rock emerged in the mid-1970s as a reaction against both hard rock and progressive rock; it was also heavily influenced by its own DIY ethic which advocated assertive autonomy for musicians and fans alike.

The 1980s saw a return to more conventional forms of rock music with artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Tyler and Def Leppard achieving commercial success. Heavy metal developed in the late 1970s with bands such as Black Sabbath gaining popularity for their dark lyrics and distorted guitars sounds; in contrast to earlier hard rock bands which had emphasised volume over distortion. Thrash metal emerged in the early 1980s with bands such as Metallica gaining popularity for their aggressive style which blended high speed riffing with heavy drums beats.
