The Reception

The Reception is the first act of the musical Rock of Ages. It introduces the characters and sets up the plot. The Reception is a fun and fast-paced act that will get audiences singing along from the very beginning.

The Set

The set for Rock of Ages is simple and effective, using a few well-chosen pieces to evoke the feel of an 80s rock concert. The set pieces are:

-A large rock structure in the center of the stage, representing the Hollywood Rock sign
-A turntable in front of the rock structure, representing the stage at a rock concert
-A long catwalk extending from the turntable to the back of the stage, representing the runway at a rock concert
-A lighted sign above the catwalk, spelling out “Rock of Ages” in neon letters
-A staircase leading up to the catwalk, representing the stairs leading up to the stage at a rock concert

The set is decorated with various 80s memorabilia, including:

-An inflatable guitar
-An inflatable microphone
-An inflatable bass guitar
-An inflatable drum set
-An inflatable keyboard

The Costumes

When creating the costumes for the show, the costume designer had to keep in mind that the majority of the action takes place in a quarry. The color palette for the costumes is therefore mostly different shades of blue and grey, with a few pops of color here and there. The costumes for the leads are mostly period-appropriate, while the ensemble costumes are more contemporary.

The female lead, Sherrie Christian, wears a variety of outfits throughout the show. In the beginning, she is seen wearing a white dress with blue flowers. This is meant to contrast with her future self, who wears all black. As she becomes more involved with Drew Boone, she starts to wear more revealing outfits. First, she wears a tight red dress to seduce him, and then later in the show she wears a black bustier and fishnet stockings.

Drew Boone starts off the show wearing blue jeans and a white t-shirt. As he gets more into the rock n’ roll lifestyle, his fashion choices become more extreme. He starts to wear ripped up jeans, tight leather pants, and eventually gets an array of tattoos on his arms.

The ensemble costumes are mostly denim and leather, with some sequins here and there. They are meant to be evocative of 1980’s fashion, while still being relatively timeless.

The Props

musicals, props, costumes, wigs, sets

One of the most important aspects of putting on a musical is having the props. Props help set the scene and create the atmosphere for the audience. They also help the actors and actresses get into character.

The first step in acquiring props is to make a list of what you need. This can be daunting, but it is essential in order to make sure you have everything you need. Once you have your list, you can start shopping for props. You can find props at thrift stores, garage sales, and online.

Some things to keep in mind when shopping for props are:
-Size: Will the prop fit on stage?
-Weight: Will the prop be too heavy for an actor or actress to carry?
-Cost: Can you afford the prop?
-Durability: Will the prop survive multiple performances?
-Age: Does the prop look its age?
authenticity: Is the prop an accurate representation of what was used during that time period?

The Lighting

The stage is dimly lit. There is a large rock in the center of the stage. The rock is lit up from below by a spotlight. The light shines on the faces of the two actors as they sit on the rock.

The actors are wearing dark clothing. The light shines on their faces, making them look ethereal. They sing softly to each other, their voices echoing in the darkness.

As the song progresses, the light slowly fades until the stage is completely dark. The two actors are illuminated by the spotlight once again. They stand up and embrace each other as they sing the final chorus.
