The making of Runestone

The making of Runestone: A Rock Musical began in early 2016, when composer and lyricist Andrew R. Butler was commissioned by the TheatreWorks Silicon Valley to write a new musical. The project was developed over the course of a year, with workshops and readings held in San Francisco and Los Angeles. The original concept for the musical was conceived by Butler and director Leila Cohan-Miccio, with input from TheatreWorks artistic director Robert Kelley.

The show is inspired by the real-life mystery of the Kensington Runestone, a 200-pound slab of greywacke sandstone found in 1898 in Minnesota that bears an inscription in runes which has been variously interpreted as evidence of pre-Columbian Viking exploration of North America. The musical follows the journey of two contemporary teens who become obsessed with the Runestone and embark on their own expedition to uncover its secrets.

Runestone: A Rock Musical had its world premiere at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley in September 2017, directed by Cohan-Miccio and starring Anika Noni Rose as Emma Hanskarlsson, one of the teen protagonists. The production received critical acclaim, with theatre critics praising the show’s “infectious energy”, “smart writing”, and “gorgeous” score.
